My experience in Honors Organic Chemistry lab was actually incredibly pleasant. Most students think organic chemistry and cringe even more when thinking about the lab portion as well. This honors section though was much different than the traditional academic lab. In this section, I experienced my first exposure to organic chemistry research. While I have plenty of experience doing research relating to the field of medicine, I had never seen it in a chemistry setting. While the thought process is generally the same, the procedures are completely different. Not only that, but it finally gave reason and, in my opinion, practical use to many of the techniques we learned throughout the first semester which I thought were rather useless at the time. Our goal was to make an oxirane starting with a substituted alkene. Once we had an oxirane, or next goal was to try and synthesize an amino alcohol and a carbonate. While my lab partner and I didn't have much success with any of these steps, it was a great experience actually partaking in research that was relevant from a chemistry stand point.
